Sri Lanka: Rail workers withdraw strike as of June 11 /update 2
Rail workers call off strike in Sri Lanka as of June 11. Lingering rail service disruptions certain.
Striking workers under the Sri Lanka Railways Locomotive Operating Engineers' Union have called off their action June 10 after successful negotiations with government officials. A section of union members started the action June 6 to denounce the alleged delays in promotions and other grievances. The work stoppage will continue causing rail service disruptions through the morning of June 11.
Increased demand for other modes of transport is likely through June 11, especially during morning and evening peak hours. Business disruptions associated with delayed deliveries and employees' difficulties in reaching workplaces are possible. Fresh strikes and protests may occur if officials renege on their promises.
Confirm all rail bookings and train schedules through at least June 11. Allow extra time for travel, and expect increased congestion on available services. Heed all official instructions.
