Situation calm following earlier gunfire along Uvira Avenue in Kinshasa, DRC, July 31. Increased security possible.
The situation is calm along Uvira Avenue in the Gombe area of Kinshasa following reported gunfire on earlier July 31. Reports over the incident are conflicting. Olive Lembe Kabila, the wife of former president Joseph Kabila, claimed she was targeted in a politically motivated attack; however, other media and police reports suggest that a group of youth targeted a residence over a land dispute between two businessmen. Police forces have made multiple arrests. Some expatriates living in the area have reportedly been injured.
An increased security presence is possible through late July 31 and may cause localized congestion in the area.
Avoid the vicinity of the avenue to minimize potential travel delays. Heed instructions from the security forces.
