Guatemala: Indigenous farmers to demonstrate in central Guatemala City on July 10
Indigenous farmers to protest in Guatemala City, Guatemala, July 10, to demand several policies from the national government.
Indigenous farm workers affiliated with the Committee for Rural Development (Comite para el Desarrollo Campesino, CODECA) plan to protest in Guatemala City on July 10. The purpose of the action is to demand several concessions from the national government, including the removal of Attorney General Consuelo Porras, an end to forced removals of rural communities, and increased rural investment, among other things.
Participants will assemble at different locations around the Guatemalan capital starting at 07:00 before marching in four columns to the Plaza de la Constitucion in the city center. The four gathering sites are: Plaza Obelisco in Zona 10; Centra Norte Mall (Atlantic Highway); Calzada Roosevelt; and El Trebol.
The event will probably draw very large numbers of participants; significant transport disruptions are likely. Authorities will almost certainly deploy increased security along the march routes and near government buildings.
Exercise increased situational awareness if operating in Guatemala City on July 10. Allow additional time to reach destinations. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
