Nepal: Protests possible nationwide ahead of and on July 12

Protests possible in Nepal ahead of and on July 12 ahead of a no-confidence vote in Kathmandu.

Warning

Protests are possible nationwide ahead of a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on July 12. On July 5, the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) and the Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) withdrew their support for Dahal's government. Under Article 100 (2) of the constitution, the Prime Minister must introduce a motion of no-confidence to the House of Representatives within 30 days to prove a majority. The potential vote comes as opposition parties attempt to form a power-sharing deal.

Protests could occur in major cities nationwide, including Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Bharatpur. Demonstrators will likely gather near government buildings, public spaces, sports venues, and thoroughfares. As a precaution, police will likely maintain increased security in sensitive areas of Kathmandu, particularly near government buildings such as the International Convention Centre. Any gatherings that form could quickly devolve into vandalism and looting. Clashes between protesters and security forces are possible. Security measures and related protests that materialize may prompt localized business and transport disruptions.

Exercise caution near prominent government buildings, particularly at the International Convention Centre. Plan for localized transport disruptions; use alternative routes to avoid security cordons and potential protest sites. Avoid all demonstrations due to the potential for clashes. Monitor local media for updates on unrest and road conditions. Carry identification at all times and remain nonconfrontational if stopped or questioned by security personnel.
