Sri Lanka: Rail workers call off nationwide strike as of July 12 /update 1

Unionized rail station masters and controllers have withdrawn a nationwide strike in Sri Lanka effective 00:01 July 12. The action began 00:01 July 10 to demand the resolution of various grievances related to employment conditions. The move significantly disrupted train services and prompted the cancellation of a few hundred trips. Lingering rail service disruptions are likely through at least July 12 as workers resume duties.

Increased demand for other modes of transport is possible; long queues for available train services and congestion are particularly likely in Colombo during peak hours. Associated business disruptions such as employee late coming and absenteeism is possible.
