Brazil: Multiple fires burning across Sao Paulo State as of Aug. 25

Officials maintain states of emergency in multiple cities in Sao Paulo State, Brazil, as of Aug. 25 due to wildfires.

Warning

Officials are responding to multiple fires burning across Sao Paulo State as of Aug. 25. States of emergency have been declared in 45 cities and towns in the state in response to the over 2,000 active forest fires. The government has directed the military to intervene to assist in the fire-fighting operations. A particular focus has been the city of Ribeirao Preto, where power outages, air pollution, and water supply issues have been reported. Other adversely impacted locations include Pitangueiras, Altinopolis and Sertaozinho. Two people also died while battling fires in Urupes on Aug. 23. Approximately 15 highways are also fully or partially blocked across the state.

Depending on the progression of the wildfires, the status of nearby roads could change over the coming hours and days. Authorities may close routes near fires and evacuate communities depending on fire activity and the needs of response operators. Residents' return will probably disrupt traffic flows after authorities lift evacuation orders. Power and water supply outages are possible in affected areas. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall could contribute to traffic delays and airport operations disruptions in the region.

Heed all evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will cause increased congestion and delays. Reconfirm all flights. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in an easily accessible "go-bag." Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.

Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses may be more susceptible to the negative effects of smoke inhalation. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
