Costa Rica: Activists plan to protest in San Jose on Aug. 28, other urban centers on Aug. 29
Activists plan to protest at Parque de la Merced in San Jose from 08:00 Aug. 28 and in other cities in Costa Rica from 09:00 Aug. 29.
Multiple teacher and student unions, including the Association of Secondary Education Teachers (Asocion de Profesores de Segunda Ensenanza, APSE), have called for a protest march in San Jose on Aug. 28 and in other urban centers on Aug. 29 to demand more funding for public education. In San Jose, protesters plan to gather at Parque de la Merced from 08:00 before marching to Plaza de la Democracia near the Legislative Assembly. Protests elsewhere in the country will begin from 09:00 on Aug. 29, although organizers have not yet confirmed the gathering locations. Likely gathering areas are city centers, public squares, government buildings and major road routes.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the gathering sites on Aug. 28 and 29. While the protests will probably pass peacefully, minor skirmishes between police and demonstrators remain possible.
As a standard precaution, avoid all demonstrations. Plan for delays and alternative routes if operating in central San Jose on Aug. 28 and other affected locations on Aug. 29. Strictly heed instructions from authorities.
