Tanker truck crashes, ignites on DR-1 south of Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, Aug. 13; transport disruptions reported.
Authorities are responding to a fire on DR-1 (Autopista Duarte) south of Santiago de los Caballeros on the evening of Aug. 13 after a tanker truck crashed and exploded on the route near La Torre. The fire has reportedly spread to several other vehicles in the area, and at least two people have been transferred to a medical facility in connection with the incident. Officials have closed part of DR-1, and heavy traffic has been reported on the highway in both directions in the area. The fire has emitted thick, black smoke.
The smoke from the fire may noticeably worsen air quality in the surrounding area over the short term. Transport disruptions will likely continue on the affected stretch of DR-1 and nearby routes until firefighters extinguish the blaze and emergency crews vacate the area. Officials may close additional segments of DR-1 or other local routes on short notice to facilitate the emergency response and ensure public safety.
Avoid the incident site until authorities extinguish the fire and vacate the area. Allow additional time if traveling in nearby areas, and consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the affected stretch of DR-1. Consider remaining indoors if smoke is heavy, especially if you suffer from a respiratory illness, such as asthma, or conditions that lead to increased risk from smoke exposure. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
