DRC: Political activists to stage rally in Kinshasa Aug. 31
Political activists to rally at the Mambenga Field in Kinshasa's N'Djili neighborhood, DRC, Aug. 31. Localized disruptions possible.
Political activists associated with Engagement for Citizenship and Development party (ECiDe, Engagement Pour La Citoyennete et Le Developpement) plan to rally at the Mambenga Field in Kinshasa's N'Djili neighborhood on Aug. 31. The purpose of the gathering is to show support for party leader Martin Fayulu upon his return from abroad. Participants will almost certainly assemble at N'Djili International Airport (FIH) upon his arrival and accompany him to the rally site. It as yet remains unclear what time Fayulu's plane will arrive or when the rally will begin; the event could draw large numbers of participants. Local authorities have granted authorization for the gathering to take place.
Authorities will almost certainly deploy increased security near Mambenga Field during the rally and at FIH airport upon Fayulu's arrival. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely near the impacted area. Clashes between activists and security forces cannot be ruled out, particularly if demonstrators are overly disruptive or ignore police orders to disperse.
Mambenga Field is located at the intersection of Kimbuta Boulevard and Market (Marche) Avenue, approximately 9.6 km (6 mi) west along the Route Nationale 1 west of FIH.
Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the rally and related disruptions. If violence breaks out, immediately leave the area and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Remain polite and nonconfrontational if stopped at a security checkpoint or questioned by police. Heed the instructions of local authorities. Allow extra time for travel between the airport and central Kinshasa if booked to fly via FIH on Aug. 31.
