Opposing activist groups to march, rally in central Leipzig, Germany, Aug. 17. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Opposing activist groups plan to demonstrate in central Leipzig Aug. 17. The following events are planned:

  • LGBTQ activists will gather at Augustplatz at 11:30 and march through the city center before returning to Augustplatz and ending their demonstration at 16:00. Organizers expect up to 18,000 attendees.

  • Counter-protesters denouncing the LGBTQ event plan will demonstrate at Leipzig's Main Railway Station (Hauptbahnhof). Local authorities expect 400-1,000 people to attend this gathering; organizers have as yet announced no specific start time.

  • A demonstration condemning the counter-protest will also take place at the Leipzig Main Railway Station from 09:30.

Authorities will deploy increased security in the city due to the potential for confrontations between opposing groups of demonstrators. Transport disruptions are likely in central Leipzig throughout the day Aug. 17. Demonstrations may obstruct passenger access to the Leipzig Main Railway Station; though unlikely, rail service disruptions are possible at the facility.

Avoid the demonstration areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near protest sites, particularly Leipzig's Main Railway Station. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
