Grenade attacks kill at least four people, wound more than 12 others in Quetta, Pakistan, Aug. 13-14; lingering heightened security likely.
Officials will likely maintain heightened security measures in Quetta over the short term after a series of grenade attacks killed at least four people and wounded more than 12 others in the city Aug. 13-14. The blasts targeted various locations in the lead-up to and during the Independence Day holiday, observed on Aug. 14, including the vicinities of Quetta Railway Station, Joint Road, and a shop selling Independence Day wares in the Liaquat Bazaar area, among other sites. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) separatist group has reportedly claimed responsibility for several of the assaults. Authorities have set up cordons in multiple parts of the city and launched investigations to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
Localized transport and business disruptions will likely impact areas affected by attacks and heightened security. Additional attacks cannot be ruled out in Quetta over the short term.
Avoid locations affected by grenade attacks until authorities give the all-clear and vacate the areas. Exercise heightened vigilance if operating in Quetta. If a security incident occurs in your area, immediately leave the vicinity and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.
