Pakistan: Authorities likely to maintain increased security in parts of Islamabad into late August

Tight security likely in Islamabad, Pakistan, after activists attempt to storm Supreme Court building on Aug. 20.

Warning

Authorities will likely maintain an increased security presence in parts of Islamabad over the coming days after protesters attempted to storm the Supreme Court building on Aug. 20. Activists affiliated with the Aalmi Majlis Tahaffuz-i-Nabuwat (AMTKN) clashed with police, who responded with baton charges and tear gas to prevent them from reaching the court. AMTKN supporters rallied at various locations, including Express Chowk, to demand that the court overturn its ruling concerning a member of the Ahmadiyya community who was granted bail after allegedly violating blasphemy laws.

Additional demonstrations of varying types are possible into late August. Potential gathering sites include government buildings, public squares, and thoroughfares. Well-attended gatherings could draw hundreds of participants. Heightened security measures, including road blockades, are possible depending on the severity of the perceived threat. Isolated security incidents, including further clashes between activists and police, cannot be ruled out. Associated localized transport and business disruptions are likely.

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan accordingly for potential localized transport and business disruptions. Maintain contact with your diplomatic mission. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
