Pakistan: Jamaat-e-Islami party to hold anti-government protest in Multan, Punjab Province, 17:00 Aug. 16
Jamaat-e-Islami rally planned in Multan, Pakistan, Aug. 16 over government policies. Increased security, localized disruptions certain.
The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) party plans to hold a protest near the Chungi No. 9 bus station in Multan, Punjab Province, from 17:00 Aug. 16. The action is to denounce the effects of alleged misgovernance, including economic issues, increased electricity prices, and load shedding. A few hundred people may attend the event. Protest plans may change at short notice if authorities deny or cancel permission for the event.
Security personnel will almost certainly monitor the protest and move to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Localized transport disruptions and traffic curbs are likely near the gathering site.
Local officials have previously issued Section 144 orders in the lead-up to large rallies; the rules prohibit unauthorized public gatherings of more than four people and the carriage of arms in public, among others. Authorities may also impose roadblocks to prevent the gathering. Clashes between police and activists are possible. Associated local business disruptions may occur.
Avoid the demonstration due to possible violence. Do not navigate roadblocks as protesters may attack vehicles. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately for a secure building. Allow additional time for journeys in the affected area. Monitor trusted local media on protest updates as organizers may not announce changes in advance. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
