Spain: Activists to demonstrate in Barcelona and Madrid Aug. 17
Activists to protest at Arco de Triunfo in Barcelona and Puerta del Sol in Madrid, Spain, from 20:00 Aug. 17; heightened security likely.
Activists plan to protest at the Arco de Triunfo/Arc de Triomf in Barcelona and at Puerta del Sol in Madrid from 20:00 Aug. 17. The purpose of the demonstrations is to denounce alleged fraud in Venezuela's July 28 presidential election. The protests are slated to coincide with Venezuelan opposition leaders' calls for global protests on Aug. 17. It was not immediately clear how many people may participate in the demonstrations in Spain; however, several thousand people reportedly participated in a related protest in Madrid on Aug. 7 and a similar number may attend the Aug. 17 rallies.
Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the protest sites. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or groups of rival activists cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the protests as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the site of a planned protest. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
