Rescue operations continue; at least 60 dead and over 100 missing as of Aug. 26 after dam fails in Arbaat, Red Sea State, Sudan, Aug. 25.

Critical

As of Aug. 26, emergency services continue response operations after the Arbaat Dam collapsed near Arbaat, Red Sea State, eastern Sudan, on Aug. 25. The incident has resulted in at least 60 fatalities and left over 100 people missing. Early reports suggest that the collapse was due to heavy rainfall. The burst has caused severe infrastructural damage to the area and led to flooding.

Casualties will likely increase in the coming hours as authorities assess the damage. Evacuations are likely over nearby localities. Localized travel disruptions are almost certain while the emergency response continues. Excess flooding could cause power cuts, affect clean water sources, or disrupt telecommunication services in the area. As the main supply of clean water to the nearby city of Port Sudan, water shortages are possible. Disruptions may continue in the coming hours or possibly days.

Arbaat is located about 40 km (25 miles) northwest of Port Sudan.

Avoid the impacted area until authorities give the all-clear. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments before travel. Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions where flooding has been forecast. Do not drive on flooded roads. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages. Stock up on clean water sources if you are located in the affected area or Port Sudan.
