Critical

Emergency services continue responding to a dam burst that occurred near Arbaat, Red Sea State, eastern Sudan, on Aug. 25. Early reports suggest that the collapse was due to heavy rainfall. The burst has caused severe infrastructural damage to the area and led to flooding. As of Aug. 26, reports suggest that at least 60 people have died, and over 100 could be missing.

Casualties will likely increase in the coming hours as authorities assess the damage. Evacuations over nearby localities are likely. Localized travel disruptions are almost certain while the emergency response continues. Excess flooding could cause power cuts, affect clean water sources, or disrupt telecommunication services in the area. As the main supply of clean water to the nearby city of Port Sudan, water shortages are possible. Disruptions may continue in the coming hours or possibly days.

Arbaat is located about 40 km (25 miles) northwest of Port Sudan.

Avoid the impacted area until authorities give the all-clear. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments before travel. Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions where flooding has been forecast. Do not drive on flooded roads. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages. Stock up on clean water sources if you are located in the affected area or Port Sudan.
