Western, Central Europe: Activists to demonstrate in cities across the region Aug. 17
Activists to protest in urban centers across parts of Europe Aug. 17 in response to recent election outcome in Venezuela.
Activists plan to protest in urban centers across Western Europe and Central Europe on Aug. 17. The purpose of the demonstrations is to denounce alleged fraud in Venezuela's July 28 presidential election. The protests are slated to coincide with Venezuelan opposition leaders' calls for global protests on Aug. 17. It was not immediately clear how many people may participate in the demonstrations; however, several thousand people reportedly participated in a related protest in Madrid, Spain, on Aug. 7, and similar crowd sizes may materialize at some of the Aug. 17 demonstrations. Some of the larger events are likely to occur in the locations below.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the protest sites. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or groups of rival activists cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the protests as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the site of a planned protest. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
