Austria: Multiple political groups plan to demonstrate in Vienna Nov. 30 /update 1
Multiple political groups plan to demonstrate in Vienna, Austria, on Nov. 30. Counterprotests, disruptions likely; confrontations possible.
Activists affiliated with the MFG Austria political party plan to gather and demonstrate at Helden Square from 12:00 on Nov. 30. The action's purpose is to demonstrate support for the political party and its values. Several hundred people are likely to participate.
Separately, local officials have banned demonstrations planned by the radical "Fair Thinking" group in support of the right-wing FPO political party. Counterprotesters had also planned to gather to denounce these demonstrations. As of Nov. 29, police warn that spontaneous protests remain possible, and confrontations between rival political groups are possible.
Authorities are likely to deploy increased security to monitor the gatherings and keep the rival groups separate. Heightened security, road closures, and pedestrian congestion will likely prompt road travel and transport disruptions. Confrontations and violence between groups of protestors and between protestors and police are possible.
Avoid the demonstrations as a standard precaution. Plan for extra travel time near the affected area. Heed instructions from authorities. Depart the area immediately in the event of violence.
