Afghanistan: Increased security likely near Daykundi and Ghor border areas into late September following major armed attack on Sept. 12
Tight security likely near Daykundi and Ghor border areas in Afghanistan into late September after armed attack on Sept. 12.
Authorities will almost certainly maintain an enhanced security posture near the Daykundi and Ghor border areas into late September following an armed attack on Sept. 12. Preliminary information indicates unidentified gunmen targeted civilians in a local village near the affected region leaving at least 15 people dead and six others wounded. There are unconfirmed reports that most of the victims are ethnic Hazara. The Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) has reportedly claimed responsibility for the incident; Taliban authorities have as yet provided no details on the attack.
Security-related localized transport and business disruptions are likely. Additional attacks cannot be ruled out.
Exercise extreme caution if operating in or near the affected region. Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Heed instructions from authorities.
Terrorist groups in Afghanistan, particularly IS-K, continue to target minority communities, such as the Hazara population, and foreign nationals. On May 17, a group of gunmen attacked foreign tourists in a market in Bamyan Province, which is located in central Afghanistan. The incident left at least seven people dead, including three Spanish tourists and an Afghan citizen. IS-K claimed responsibility for the assault. Recent incidents underscore that the operational environment in Afghanistan is of extreme risk and poses a significant threat to both local and international individuals.
