Argentina: Authorities close National Route 20 near Cordoba due to wildfire Sept. 5
Emergency crews responding to wildfire west of Cordoba, Argentina, as of evening of Sept. 5; authorities close part of National Route 20.
Emergency crews are working to contain a wildfire burning in the vicinity of La Calera, west of Cordoba, as of the evening of Sept. 5. Authorities have closed National Route 20 (Cordoba-Carlos Paz highway) near Yocsina and Malagueno due to the blaze and associated smoke. The fire has injured at least four firefighters and prompted officials to evacuate some individuals in the region, including those in La Perla. The blaze rapidly spread amid windy conditions; further wildfire growth is possible over the short term.
Depending on the progression of the wildfire, the status of nearby roads could change over the coming hours and days. Authorities may close additional routes within the wildfire complex and evacuate more communities depending on fire activity and the needs of response operators. Residents' return will probably disrupt traffic flows after authorities lift evacuation orders. Power outages are likely in affected areas. Smoke from the fire may noticeably worsen air quality in the region. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall could contribute to traffic delays and congestion in the region and may affect parts of Cordoba.
Heed all evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will likely cause increased congestion and delays. Consider taking alternative routes to avoid the closed section of National Route 20. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in an easily accessible "go-bag." Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.
Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Individuals with chronic respiratory illnesses may be more susceptible to the negative effects of smoke inhalation. Eye irritation is possible; flush irritated eyes with copious amounts of clean water.
