Emergency crews responding to wildfires in northern Cordoba Province, Argentina, as of Sept. 20. Evacuations and road closures reported.
Emergency crews are responding to wildfires burning across northern Cordoba Province as of Sept. 20. More than 200 firefighters are working to control the fires, which are burning near the towns of Capilla del Monte, Los Cocos, San Esteban, and Chancani. The wildfires have prompted authorities to evacuate more than 50 people from their homes, at least two of which have sustained fire-related damage. Officials have closed Route 38 multiple times in the province since Sept. 19; authorities will likely close the route on several more occasions over the coming days due to the smoke created by the fires and the lack of visibility in the region.
Emergency responders may close further roads and evacuate additional persons in affected areas on short notice, depending on evolving wildfire conditions and operational needs. Smoke from the wildfires could cause poor air quality. The wildfires could also lead to power supply disruptions in some areas.
Heed all instructions issued by local authorities, including evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in affected areas; road closures and detours will likely cause increased congestion and delays. Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in a "go-bag" that can be easily accessed. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power disruptions.
