Student protesters to demonstrate across Argentina Sept. 16 in remembrance of Night of the Pencils. Tight security, disruptions likely.

Informational

Activists affiliated with several student groups, including the Union of Secondary Students (Union de Estudiantes Secundarios, UES), are planning a day of demonstrations nationwide Sept. 16. The purpose of the action is to commemorate the anniversary of the Night of the Pencils; the incident occurred in 1974 when agents of the National Reorganization Process (Proceso de Reorganizacion Nacional) government abducted 10 high school student activists, with several still missing. Details of known demonstrations include:

  • Buenos Aires: 09:00 - Space for Memory and Promotion of Human Rights

  • Cordoba: 17:00 - March from intersection of Colon and Canada to Plaza de la Intendencia

  • La Plata: 14:00 - Plaza Olazabal

Further demonstrations are likely in other cities across Argentina, particularly near public squares, government buildings, and schools. Heightened security, as well as localized transit and business disruptions, are likely near demonstration sites.

Exercise caution near demonstrations. Strictly heed the directives of authorities. Plan for localized transit and business disruptions near protest sites.
