Austria: Protest activity reported in Vienna late Sept. 29
Protest activity denouncing electoral victory of Freedom Party reported in Vienna, Austria, late Sept. 29; heightened security reported.
Hundreds of protesters have gathered near the Parliament building in Vienna late Sept. 29 to denounce the projected victory of the right-wing Freedom Party of Austria (Freiheitliche Partei Osterreichs, FPO) in the country's Sept. 29 parliamentary election. While the FPO reportedly garnered a plurality of votes in the election, it was not immediately clear if the party would be able to form a governing coalition. Police have deployed to the vicinity of the Parliament building and cordoned off some surrounding areas.
Heightened security and localized access closures are likely in central Vienna, particularly near Parliament, into the early morning hours of Sept. 30. Consequent transport disruptions will probably affect parts of the capital. Counterdemonstrations may materialize on short notice. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or ideologically opposed individuals cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the protest activity as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling in central Vienna. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers.
