Bangladesh: Religious minority group calls for nationwide protests Sept. 21

Religious minority group calls for protests across Bangladesh Sept. 21 due to violence against minority communities. Disruptions possible.

Warning

The Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Parishad has called for protests across Bangladesh, including Dhaka, from 16:00 Sept. 21 to demand an investigation into recent communal violence in August. Reports indicate that between Aug. 4-20, more than 2,000 incidents targeting minorities occurred, resulting in at least nine deaths and damage to 69 places of worship. While organizers did not specify protest locations, the largest gatherings are likely in urban centers, especially Dhaka. Potential rally sites include government buildings, press clubs, public parks, and thoroughfares. Dozens to hundreds of people could attend each protest.

Authorities will likely monitor the event as a precaution and may use force to disperse overly unruly crowds. Minor scuffles between rival religious groups and between activists and police are possible. Protesters could march along nearby roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions.

Avoid any demonstration that materializes as a precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan accordingly for potential localized transport and business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
