Belgium: Automotive workers to protest, public transport personnel to strike in Brussels Sept. 16

Automotive workers to demonstrate at Brussels North Station in Brussels, Belgium, 10:30 Sept. 16; related public transport strike planned.

Warning

Unionized automotive workers plan to protest at Brussels North Station from 10:30 Sept. 16 to denounce possible job cuts. It remains unclear how many participants may attend; however, some sources project that the gathering could draw several thousand demonstrators.

As a show of support for the automotive workers, unionized employees of the Brussels Intercommunal Transport Company (STIB/MIVB), the primary public transport operator in Belgian capital, plan to strike across the city. STIB/MIVB predicts significant disruptions due to the work stoppage.

Heightened security and localized traffic disruptions are likely near Brussels North Station; rail transport delays are possible if protesters block access to the facility. Public transport disruptions will probably impact the entire city. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers, potentially escalating to clashes, cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the area near the protest as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near Brussels North Station. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur. Consider seeking alternatives to public transport during the strike.
