Belgium: Unionized workers to strike nationwide, protest in Brussels Oct. 1
Multisector workers to strike across Belgium, protest in Brussels Oct. 1. Flight cancellations announced; business disruptions likely.
Unionized workers employed in the security, hospitality, and cleaning sectors plan to strike across Belgium and protest in Brussels on Oct. 1. The purpose of the labor action is to denounce the alleged deterioration of working conditions. On Sept. 20, Brussels Airlines (SN) announced that it was canceling most flights scheduled in Belgium for Oct. 1 due to likely disruptions related to an expected shortage of security staff; other airlines may follow suit.
Additionally, labor action participants plan to protest at the European Parliament in Brussels. It was not immediately clear how many participants may attend; however, unions from multiple countries have announced their intention to take part in the protest.
Air travel disruptions are likely across Belgium during the strike period. Additional disruptions to public services and businesses are likely nationwide. Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the European Parliament. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.
Reconfirm planned air travel via Belgium on Oct. 1. Allow additional time for travel via public transport. Avoid protests as a standard precaution. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
