Germany: Activists demonstrating in Kiel through Sept. 8

Activists to hold protest marches in central Kiel, Germany, Sept. 6-7; protest encampment in place at Werftpark through Sept. 8.

Warning

Activists plan to hold protest marches in central Kiel Aug. 6-7. The purpose of the demonstrations is to denounce the German arms industry. Organizers expect approximately 800 participants to attend; however, this number may increase. Additionally, demonstrators are residing in a protest encampment in Werftpark through Sept. 8. Demonstrations are planned in the following locations:

  • Sept. 6: Organizers plan to march in central Kiel and "besiege and blockade" locations they associate with the arms industry. Organizers did not immediately disclose planned demonstration sites; however, it is possible that they may intend to protest at the Rheinmetall office on Doktor-Hell-Strasse, as the protest campaign focuses particular attention on Rheinmetall.

  • Sept. 7: Protest march from Bootshafen to Kaiserstrasse from 12:00, with rallies along the way at Vinetaplatz and Kiel Shipyard.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near all demonstrations. Demonstrators may employ particularly disruptive tactics, including attempts to enter or disrupt movement at commercial buildings. Heightened security is likely near the Werftpark encampment through Sept. 8. Confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers, politically opposed individuals, or frustrated motorists cannot be ruled out.

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near any protest location. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
