Authorities are responding to a gas leak at the Tabas Coal Mine in Tabas, South Khorasan Province, which occurred late Sept. 21. Reports suggest that at least 30 people were killed and 17 others injured. At least 24 people reportedly remain trapped inside. The casualty toll may increase.

Tabas is approximately 270 km (168 miles) northwest of Birjand.
