Netherlands: Port workers to strike in Rotterdam Sept. 7-8

Unionized workers to strike at Port of Rotterdam, Netherlands, 22:00 Sept. 7-02:00 Sept. 8. Protest planned; service disruptions likely.

Informational

Port workers affiliated with the Federation of Dutch Trade Unions - Ports (FNV Havens) plan to strike at the Port of Rotterdam from 22:00 Sept. 7 to 02:00 Sept. 8. The purpose of the labor action is to demand the implementation of an early retirement plan. Strike organizers have called for an associated protest next to ECT Delta on the Maasvlakte. It was not immediately clear how many people would participate in the protest.

The strike is likely to impact port operations, including freight operations and logistics management, and will probably cause residual service disruptions in the hours after work resumes. Port authorities will probably deploy an increased security presence to the protest site. Localized traffic disruptions may affect the vicinity of the port during the demonstration. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Prepare for disruptions if routing freight through the Port of Rotterdam during the strike action and on the morning of Sept. 8. Avoid all protest activity as a standard precaution.
