Nigeria: Fuel shortages continue to persist nationwide as of Sept. 2

Prolonged fuel shortages persist across Nigeria, including Abuja and Lagos, as of Sept. 2. Related protests possible.

Warning

Fuel shortages persist across the country, including in Lagos and Abuja, as of Sept. 2. On Sept. 1, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) cited a significant debt to suppliers posing a risk to fuel supply availability. It remains unclear how long the shortage may last. Fuel shortages have been recurring since the removal of fuel subsidies in May 2023;

Fuel shortages may affect business operations and transport services. Increased demand at available fuel stations may prompt congestion on nearby roads. Consumer frustration could manifest in the form of street demonstrations or sporadic clashes near filling stations.

Plan accordingly for long waits at gas stations. Stock up on fuel when available; check generators' fuel supplies. Confirm all ground transport arrangements before travel. Refrain from buying fuel on the black market. Avoid any demonstrations that may materialize. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
