Spain: Catalan independence groups plan to march in central Barcelona Sept. 11

Catalan independence groups to march and rally in Barcelona, Spain, Sept. 11; increased security, localized disruptions likely.

Informational

Catalan independence groups led by the Catalan National Assembly plan to demonstrate in central Barcelona, Sept. 11, to mark Catalan National Day. Participants will meet at the Estacio de Franca from 16:00 before marching to the Arc de Triomf. Comparable events held during previous years have drawn very large crowds. Smaller gatherings will also be held in Girona, Lleida, Tarragona, and Tortosa.

Additional police will almost certainly deploy to monitor the demonstration. Large crowds and associated security measures will likely prompt localized transport disruptions. Public transport normally routed through the area could be canceled or diverted. The action is likely to pass off peacefully, though isolated clashes with security services cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the demonstration as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of any confrontation. Check for transport disruptions before beginning journeys and allow extra time for travel in Barcelona Sept. 11.
