Sudan, Ethiopia: Gallabat border crossing point between Sudan and Ethiopia closed as of Sept. 3
Border crossing point between Gallabat, Sudan, and Metema, Ethiopia, remains closed as of Sept. 3. Localized disruptions likely.
The Gallabat border crossing point between Sudan and Metema, Amhara Region, Ethiopia, remains closed as of Sept. 3. Sudanese authorities in Al-Qadarif State closed the border on Sept. 1 after FANO rebels seized control of Metema. Ethiopian police and military forces were reportedly allowed to cross into Sudan after being disarmed. FANO fighters also allowed Sudanese nationals to cross into Ethiopia. Sudanese officials did not immediately confirm when the crossing will reopen.
An increased security presence is likely at the crossing point. Disruptions to cross-border transport and local traffic are also likely over the coming days. If trade is disrupted for an extended period, protests denouncing the border closure are possible.
Gallabat is approximately 145 km (90 miles) southeast of Al-Qadarif. Metema is approximately 146 km (91 mi) northwest of Gondar.
Plan for disruptions to cross-border transport and local traffic in the area. Consider making alternative plans for passenger travel and freight shipment. Heed authorities' instructions. Avoid all protests.
