Sudan, Ethiopia: Gallabat border crossing point between Sudan and Ethiopia remains closed as of Sept. 6 /update 1

Border crossing point between Gallabat, Sudan, and Metema, Ethiopia, remains closed as of Sept. 6. Localized disruptions ongoing.

Informational

The Gallabat border crossing point between Sudan and Metema, Amhara Region, Ethiopia, remains closed as of Sept. 6. Clashes between Ethiopian police and military forces and FANO rebels escalated along the border region Sept. 5, reportedly resulting in dozens of Ethiopian soldiers to flee into Sudan. Sudanese soldiers disarmed the soldiers and closed the Gallabat market to civilians. Hundreds of Sudanese civilians are reportedly stranded at the crossing point.

An increased security presence is likely at the crossing point. Disruptions to cross-border transport and local traffic are also likely until tensions ease. If trade is disrupted for an extended period, protests denouncing the border closure are possible. Further fighting along the border is possible.

Gallabat is approximately 145 km (90 miles) southeast of Al-Qadarif. Metema is approximately 146 km (91 mi) northwest of Gondar.

Plan for disruptions to cross-border transport and local traffic in the area. Consider making alternative plans for passenger travel and freight shipment. Heed authorities' instructions. Avoid all protests.

Sudanese authorities in Al-Qadarif State closed the border on Sept. 1 after FANO rebels seized control of Metema.
