The shooting occurred at around 13:30 when a motorist, driving past a Colorado State Patrol (CSP) trooper's vehicle that was parked on the center median on the US 36 highway, fired multiple shots at the trooper's vehicle. The gunman then reportedly pulled over, exited his vehicle, and fired additional shots at the CSP trooper, who then exited his police vehicle and returned fire. The exchange of gunfire killed the assailant and left the trooper with non-life-threatening wounds. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident at the scene.
