US: Disruptions likely in downtown Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Sept. 10 due to scheduled presidential debate
Heightened security, road closures in Philadelphia, Penn., US, Sept. 10 due to planned presidential debate. Protests possible.
Heightened security, road closures, and protests are likely in areas of downtown Philadelphia on Sept. 10 as the city hosts a high-profile planned presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. Authorities have announced several road closures between early Sept. 10 and early Sept. 11 around the National Constitution Center where the debate will occur, including:
From Arch to Market Street between 4th and 7th streets
6th Street exit off of Interstate 676 eastbound
Arch and Race streets during the debate
Interstate 676 is scheduled to remain open but may close if authorities deem necessary.
These closures will also impact Southeastern Pennsylvanian Transportation Authority (SEPTA) bus services in the area. Authorities will almost certainly deploy other heightened security measures, including an increased police presence, around the National Constitution Center. Protests are likely near the venue; pro-Palestine activists plan to gather near City Hall starting at 18:30 and may attempt to march to the National Constitution Center. Clashes between protesters and police, or among activists from rival camps cannot be ruled out.
Plan accordingly for transport disruptions and travel delays in central Philadelphia during the scheduled debate. Consider alternative driving routes; heed the instructions of local authorities. Avoid all protests as a standard security precaution.
