Armenia: Opposition protests likely nationwide, especially in Yerevan, through at least mid-October /update 1

Opposition activists will likely protest in urban centers across Armenia through mid-October. Heightened security is likely.

Warning

Opposition activists will likely continue a campaign of periodic protests across Armenia through at least mid-October. The campaign's purpose is to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Leaders of the Tavush for the Motherland opposition movement have resumed intense protest following a nationwide protest campaign in May and June. Several thousand people may participate in centrally organized gatherings; smaller events are likely in other urban centers nationwide. Planned demonstrations include:

  • Oct. 9: Activists affiliated with Tavush for the Motherland plan to protest at General Prosecutor's Office on Vazgen Sargsyan Street from 12:00.

  • Oct. 12: Activists affiliated with the National-Democratic Pole, an opposition party linked with Tavush for the Motherland movement, plan to protest at Freedom Square from 16:00.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near any protests that may materialize. The largest demonstrations will almost certainly occur in Yerevan and may draw thousands of participants. Additional rallies may take place in Victory Square or at the National Assembly. While most gatherings have concluded peacefully, violence occurred during a demonstration on June 12, injuring more than 100 people and resulting in around 100 arrests. Further confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers or activists from rival political camps are possible. Demonstrators periodically block major highways around the country and, at times, have caused significant local disruptions.

Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling through urban centers where demonstrations may occur, or via major highways. If possible, check traffic conditions before departure and plan alternative routes in case of blockades if planning to travel on major highways. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
