Ghana: Labor unions plan indefinite strike nationwide from Oct. 10 over mining environmental issues

Labor unions plan to strike across Ghana from Oct. 10 over mining environmental issues. Related protests possible.

Warning

Labor unions represented by the Organised Labour organization have called for a nationwide strike from Oct. 10. The action is to denounce illegal mining, known as "Galamsey," due to its impact on the environment. The work stoppage may last several days if the government does not answer their demands.

Disruptions to various public and private sectors are likely. Related protests are possible. Potential protest locations include sites of mining companies or government buildings such as the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in Accra. Increased security is likely near any protests that occur. Clashes between police and protesters are possible.

Reconfirm business appointments scheduled to occur from Oct. 10. Allow extra time for travel. Avoid any demonstrations that materialize; if crowds form or violence occurs nearby, leave the area immediately. Heed instructions from security services.

During a protest over economic hardship and mining issues on Sept. 21, the police arrested over 50 people in Accra for engaging in acts of vandalism and obstructing road traffic.
