Iran: Increased security is likely in Goharkoh, Sistan va Baluchestan Province, through October after armed attack
Heightened security likely through late October after assailants kill 10 police officers in Goharkoh, Sistan va Baluchestan Province, Iran.
Heightened security is likely in Sistan va Baluchestan Province's Goharkoh area (Taftan County) through late October following an attack by unidentified assailants. Officials reported Oct. 26 that a group of police personnel had been attacked in the area. At least 10 people were killed. There have been no claims of responsibility.
Authorities may implement checkpoints and other security measures in an attempt to locate the perpetrators of the attack.
Exercise situational awareness if operating near the Iranian-Pakistani border. Avoid all areas where security forces have deployed. Plan for localized ground transport disruptions.
Sistan va Baluchestan is one of Iran's most restive provinces. The province is also Iran's poorest region whose residents, who are Sunni and Balochi, allege that authorities have regularly engaged in systematic discrimination, police repression, and forced resettlement.
Multiple resistance and separatist groups operate in the region, including Jundallah, Harakat Ansar Iran, Jaish ul-Adl, and Ansar Al-Furqan. These groups have occasionally launched attacks against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) bases and checkpoints.
