Mexico: Heightened security likely in Chilpancingo, Guerrero State, late Oct. 6 following assassination of mayor

Police response probable after assassination of mayor in Chilpancingo, Guerrero State, Mexico, as of late Oct. 6. Disruptions likely.

Warning

Heightened security is likely in Chilpancingo, Guerrero State, as of late Oct. 6 in response to the assassination of the city's mayor Alejandro Arcos. Authorities reportedly found Arcos' remains in a vehicle in the Villas del Roble neighborhood of the city. His death occurred six days after he assumed office and three days after the murder of Francisco Tapia, the newly elected secretary general of the city council. Drug trafficking organizations (DTO) opposing the politicians' policies are probably responsible for the murders.

Police operations, including traffic stops and patrols, are likely in the area through at least Oct. 7 as authorities work to apprehend the culprits and investigate the incidents. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely. Violence between security forces and DTO members is possible.

Chilpancingo is approximately 86 km (54 miles) north-northeast of Acapulco.

Plan for localized transport and business disruptions. Strictly heed the directives of authorities. If violence occurs nearby, immediately take shelter in a secure, nongovernment building.
