Nepal: Protest planned in Pokhara, Oct. 20, during high-profile court hearing over cooperative bank fraud

Political party to protest in Pokhara, Nepal, Oct. 20 during bank fraud hearing. Increased security, disruptions certain. Clashes possible.

Warning

Supporters of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) will rally at Sahid Chowk intersection, Pokhara, Oct. 20. The gathering is being held in solidarity with RSP leader and former deputy prime minister Rabi Lamichhane, who will appear in a hearing regarding a cooperative bank fraud at the nearby Kaski District Court. Several hundred people may join the event. Counter-protests by victims of the bank fraud are possible in the vicinity. Further related demonstrations are probable in the coming weeks.

Authorities are deploying additional personnel and imposing security cordons around the court building as a precaution. Demonstrators will probably march along or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Routes leading to the Pokhara International Airport (PKR) could also face delays and heightened security deployment. Security personnel tend to use batons and water cannons to disperse overly disruptive protesters. Clashes between rival groups are possible, especially during protests nearby.

Avoid protests due to the threat of violence. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Exercise caution near the Kaski District Court building in the coming weeks. Allow additional travel time in downtown areas, including to and from PKR; confirm road status and transport reservations in Pokhara Oct. 20. Monitor trusted local media for protest updates, as organizers may not announce details in advance. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
