Nepal: Protests continue in Pokhara as of Oct. 22 over high-profile cooperative bank fraud case hearing /update 1

Political party protesting in Pokhara, Nepal, as of Oct. 22 over bank fraud case. Increased security, disruptions certain. Clashes possible.

Warning

Supporters of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) are continuing to stage rallies in Pokhara as of Oct. 22. They will gather at 13:30 Oct. 22 at the Zero Kilometer junction; previous rallies have occurred at Prithvi Chowk and Shahid Chowk intersections since Oct. 21. The action is to express solidarity with detained RSP leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Rabi Lamichhane, who is facing trial over a cooperative bank fraud at the nearby Kaski District Court. Several hundred people may join the events. Counterprotests by victims of the bank fraud are possible in the vicinity. Further related demonstrations are probable in the coming weeks.

Authorities are deploying additional personnel to protest sites and imposing security cordons around the court building as a precaution. Demonstrators will probably march along or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Routes leading to the Pokhara International Airport (PKR) could also face delays and heightened security deployment. Security personnel have used tear gas, batons, and water cannons to disperse earlier gatherings; similar use of force remains likely. Clashes between rival groups are possible, especially during protests nearby.

Avoid protests due to the threat of violence. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Exercise caution near the Kaski District Court building in the coming weeks. Allow additional travel time in downtown areas, including to and from PKR; confirm road status and transport reservations in Pokhara. Monitor trusted local media for protest updates, as organizers may not announce details in advance. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
