Serbia: Activists to demonstrate in Belgrade Oct. 20

Activists to protest at Akademski Plato in Belgrade, Serbia, from 17:00 Oct. 20. Heightened security, transport disruptions likely.

Informational

Activists plan to protest at the Akademski Plato at the University of Belgrade's Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade from 17:00 Oct. 20. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce the planned demolition of a bridge. Protest organizers had initially planned to demonstrate at Republic Square; however, they ultimately relocated the planned site of the demonstration after accusing authorities of attempting to quell the protest by scheduling a concert at Republic Square at the same time. The number of people who would participate in the demonstration was not immediately clear.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near the protest site. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out; such confrontations are particularly likely to occur if protesters attempt to move to Republic Square.

Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the University of Belgrade's Faculty of Philosophy. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
