Serbia: Farmers' groups to demonstrate nationwide, Nov. 1 /update 1
Farmers' groups to demonstrate across Serbia, Nov. 1. Heightened security, localized roadblocks, transport disruptions likely.
Farmers' groups plan to demonstrate nationwide, Nov. 1. Agriculture groups will denounce poor prices for produce, following reportedly bad harvests. At least five separate farmers' unions will support the action. The exact times and locations of protests remains unclear as of Oct. 29; however, in late September, farmers blocked roads in Subotica and protested at regional government buildings in Novi Sad. Similar actions, including go-slow convoys of agricultural buildings, roadblocks, and demonstrations in public squares, are likely Nov. 1.
Officials will likely deploy heightened security measures to any protest location. Road closures and transport disruptions are possible. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.
Avoid the affected areas as a standard precaution. Allow additional time for travel near any protest sites. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
