South Africa: Protest disrupting travel in central Johannesburg, Oct. 11
Members of ruling party's youth league protesting in central Johannesburg, South Africa, Oct. 11; localized disruptions likely.
Members of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) are protesting in central Johannesburg on Oct. 11. They are demanding better job opportunities for unemployed youth, among other issues. The march began at Beyers Naude Square in Braamfontein at 10:00 and was planned to end near the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) offices in Sandton.
Several hundred protesters are likely in attendance, and the action may continue to draw large crowds in the coming hours. Increased security is likely near the JSE and municipal buildings. Road blockages and localized transport disruptions are likely in the area. Skirmishes between police and protesters are possible if demonstrators ignore official orders to disperse or engage in acts of public violence.
Plan accordingly for increased security in central Johannesburg, as well as for transport and service delivery disruptions. Allow extra time to reach destinations, and seek alternative of transport if necessary. Reconfirm the status of road routes before departure. Reconfirm administrative appointments. Avoid all protests.
