Spain: Unionized teachers to conduct strike, demonstrate in Madrid Oct. 29
Unionized teachers to strike all day, march from Plaza de Atocha to Puerta del Sol in Madrid, Spain, from 17:30 on Oct. 29.
Unionized teachers plan to hold a 24-hour strike and a protest march in Madrid Oct. 29. The purpose of the labor action is to demand improved working conditions. Procession participants will gather at Plaza de Atocha (also known as Plaza del Emperador Carlos V) before departing at 17:30 and marching via the Fountain of Neptune to the Puerta del Sol. It was not immediately clear how many participants may attend the demonstration.
The strike may disrupt businesses where parents have to provide emergency childcare. Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely along the march route. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers, frustrated motorists, or opposed individuals cannot be ruled out.
Plan accordingly for increased absenteeism among employees who are parents or guardians of school-aged children on May 24; consider a liberal leave or telecommuting policy, where possible. Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the march route. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
