Syria: Explosion in Al Mazzeh in Damascus on Oct. 21

Suspected Israeli drone strike reportedly kills one person and wounds one other in Al Mazzeh area of Damascus, Syria, Oct. 21.

Warning

A suspected Israeli drone strike targeted a vehicle in the Al Mazzeh area of Damascus Oct. 21, killing one person and wounding at least one other. While the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) did not immediately issue a public acknowledgment of the suspected cross-border attack, it has regularly targeted Syrian and Iranian military infrastructure across Syria.

Emergency services personnel will likely deploy to impacted sites; transport disruptions are likely in affected areas. Military forces in Syria and northern Israel will almost certainly maintain a heightened security posture over the coming days. Further airstrikes, retaliatory attacks, and exchanges of cross-border fire are possible over the short term.

Avoid all military sites in Syria. Heed the instructions of local security forces. If airstrikes, artillery fire, or warning sirens are reported in the general vicinity, take cover in the nearest bomb shelter and remain there until further instructions are given by authorities. In light of the ongoing tensions consider avoiding nonessential travel to Syria, particularly the shared border region with Israel, until the situation stabilizes.

Tensions between Israel and Iran-aligned Syria remain extremely high. This is the latest in a string of recent cross-border acts of violence. Since 2017, the IDF has launched hundreds of preemptive strikes targeting suspected Hizballah and Iran-led fighters, weapons caches, and supply convoys in Syria.
