Bangladesh: Additional disruptive protests, clashes likely in Dhaka through at least early December

Further disruptive protests, clashes likely in Dhaka, Bangladesh, through December following recent protest activities. Exercise caution.

Warning

Additional disruptive protests and clashes are likely in Dhaka through at least early December following recent protest activities. In recent days, hundreds of activists have staged road and rail blockades in several areas, including Jurain, to denounce the High Court's recent decision to prohibit the use of battery-run rickshaws in the city. The demonstrations have resulted in intermittent ground transport disruptions and have impacted cross-city travel to several regions, such as Khulna and Rajshahi.

Intermittent clashes have also occurred between activists and police, with reports suggesting protesters hurled brick fragments at police, and officials resorted to tear gas and baton charges to disperse the crowds. A university student was also purportedly killed in an accident involving a battery-run rickshaw, which led to student-led demonstrations.

Additional demonstrations of varying types, including transport blockages, are highly likely over the coming days. Potential gathering sites include prominent government buildings, public squares, and major thoroughfares. Such gatherings will probably continue to draw hundreds of participants.

Authorities will likely monitor the gatherings and could use force to disperse unruly crowds. Depending on operational needs, officials could implement enhanced restrictions, including public gathering bans. Further between activists and police are possible. Isolated security incidents, such as arson and vandalism, cannot be ruled out. Transport disruptions are highly likely. Related localized business disruptions are possible.

Avoid all protests and roadblocks as a precaution to minimize travel delays. Allow additional time for journeys in affected areas. If clashes occur, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Confirm deliveries, road conditions, and transport reservations. Make alternative arrangements for urgent travel and/or shipments. Follow all security and transport advisories.
