Bangladesh: Garment workers' protests likely to continue in Dhaka Division through mid-November
Garment workers' protests likely to continue in Dhaka Division, Bangladesh, through mid-November. Business, transport disruptions likely.
Garment factory workers will likely continue their protest campaign in Dhaka Division through mid-November, driven by recent job layoffs and demands for better wages. Since early September, factory workers have organized gatherings in major industrial areas, including Adamjinagar, Ashulia, Dhamrai, Gazipur, Kachuket, Kafrul, Mirpur, and Savar. On Oct. 31, clashes broke out between police and garment workers protesting in Dhaka's Kafrul, Mirpur-14, and Kachuket areas, resulting in violence and the burning of an army vehicle. Security forces also opened fire on demonstrators, wounding two workers.
Factories in Dhaka Division have previously suspended operations due to unrest; further closures remain possible if protests become overly disruptive. Additional gatherings of varying types, including strikes and road blockades, remain possible over the coming weeks. Potential rally sites include factories, government buildings, sports fields, public squares, and thoroughfares. Well-attended demonstrations will likely draw hundreds to thousands of participants.
Authorities will likely deploy additional security personnel to monitor related protests. Police could use force, including baton charges and tear gas, to disperse unruly crowds. Officials may also implement enhanced security measures, such as temporary public gathering restrictions. Isolated security incidents, including vandalism and clashes between workers and police, are possible. Associated transport and business disruptions, including shipping delays, are likely.
Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Plan accordingly for potential business and transport disruptions; consider alternative arrangements for time-sensitive appointments or shipments. Maintain contact with your diplomatic mission at all times. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
