South Africa/Mozambique: Officials close Lebombo border crossing point as of Nov. 6 due to protests
South African officials close Lembombo border crossing point with Mozambique Nov. 6 due to protests. Transport disruptions ongoing.
South Africa's Border Management Authority (BMA) closed the Lembombo Crossing Point with Mozambique as of Nov. 6 due to ongoing protests in Ressano Garcia, Mozambique, following the presidential elections in early October. BMA decided to close the crossing point after protesters set vehicles on fire on the Mozambican side. South African authorities are advising travelers to use alternative routes until the situation stabilizes.
An increased security presence is likely at the crossing point. Disruptions to cross-border transport and local traffic are also probable until tensions ease. Protests denouncing the border closure are possible if trade disruptions continue for an extended period.
Lembombo is 100 km (63 miles) west of Mbombela, South Africa, and 81 km (50 miles) northwest of Maputo, Mozambique.
Plan for disruptions to cross-border transport and local traffic in the area. Consider making alternative plans for passenger travel and freight shipment. Heed authorities' instructions. Avoid all protests.
