Thailand: Heightened security is likely on Ko Pha-ngan Island through mid-November due to a terrorism threat

Tight security is likely in Ko Pha-ngan Island, Thailand, through mid-November following terrorism threat targeted at Israelis.

Warning

Authorities will likely implement enhanced security measures across Ko Pha-ngan Island following warnings of a potential terrorist attack during the monthly Full Moon Party on Nov. 15. Israeli officials issued a warning to Israeli nationals after receiving a warning from Thai officials. The Israeli government has warned its citizens to remain vigilant and to avoid large gatherings.

Measures such as vehicle and identity checks are likely near beaches, hotels, and maritime facilities. Such measures may prompt localized transport and commercial disruptions.

Ko Pha-ngan Island is approximately 100km (62.1 miles) northeast of Surat Thani.

Limit exposure to crowded locations that could be considered militant targets. Avoid the display of national and religious affiliation. Carry identification documents for presentation at any security checks. Allow additional time for potential security screenings. Heed all advice of security personnel. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation and monitor for alerts and/or instructions.

The terror threat in Thailand remains moderate. The country has experienced a number of terror attacks, including in the capital, although incidents of violence have generally been reported in the Deep South due to the ongoing insurgency. Ko Pha-ngan Island is a popular holiday destination for Israeli tourists.
